WordPress Local SEO Guide
Local SEO gets your WordPress site in front of people searching for businesses in your area. For service businesses, local rankings often drive more revenue than national organic rankings.
Google Business Profile
Claim and optimize your Google Business Profile (GBP) first — it directly controls your Google Maps listing and local pack appearances. Ensure your name, address, and phone (NAP) exactly match your website. Add photos, service descriptions, and collect reviews actively.
Local Schema Markup
Add LocalBusiness schema to your homepage and contact page:
- Business name, address, phone exactly as displayed on site
- Opening hours with OpeningHoursSpecification
- Geographic coordinates (latitude/longitude)
- Service area for businesses serving a region
RankMath and Yoast both support LocalBusiness schema with address and hours fields.
NAP Consistency
Your name, address, and phone must be identical everywhere online: website, GBP, Yelp, Facebook, industry directories. Inconsistencies confuse Google about which listing is authoritative.
Local Content Strategy
- Create pages targeting "[service] in [city]" and "[service] near [neighborhood]"
- Write blog posts covering local events, news, or issues relevant to your service
- Build local backlinks from chamber of commerce, local news sites, and partner businesses
- Add customer testimonials with location mentions to service pages
Local Citations
Citations (mentions of your NAP on other sites) are a local ranking factor. Submit to major directories: Yelp, Apple Maps Connect, Bing Places, BBB, and industry-specific directories. Use BrightLocal or Whitespark to audit existing citations for inconsistencies.
